Artist Statement
I work freehand in ink, partly for the qualities of immediacy and spontaneity, and partly because I believe artmaking should ingrain you into the present moment. To me, art is about a shift in perspective. My work began as notan studies, a Japanese term for light-dark harmony, where my primary interest was mapping out the dark shapes without the distraction of color. Stripped of color, the viewer’s eye shifts to the narrative of the main subject. The sharp contrast between light and dark adds depth and emotion. Through my work, I seek to invoke the affective aspects of life and tell the stories of the everyday.
